How to find ancestors tombstones?

Recommended Posts

Hello I am looking for the Tombstone of my great grand parents,  Anton Rikard Hoff, husband of Petrine Sevrine Hoff.  He is the father of Harald Rikard Hoff, my Farfar.

Petrine and Farfar are in Lademoen cemetary.   I heard that Anton died at sea, but wouldnt he still have a tombstone somewhere?

Am also looking for the tombstone of Jakob Johansen Otnes (1867) and Jennye Antonie Otnes f Skander (born around 1869).   They were from Rendalen but moved to Trondheim.

Tusen Hjertelig takk!

Margrethe

Tombstones are often removed after some decades to make place for new graves, so tombstones from the 19th century are not common. If Anton had a "wet" grave (i.e. he was never found), there probably was no tombstone.

Anton Rikard Hoff died at the Stokmarknes Hospital in the parish of Hadsel (in Nordland county) on June 28th, 1911 - see no.15 here: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb10081104061197.

I doubt that his headstone is still at the cemetery.

TAKK!!

Takk!   Is there any way to find out if he had been on a ship?

He worked onboard the "Fæmund" steam boat when he got an illegitimate daughter Berte in Engerdal in 1889. This vessel operated on the Lake Femunden, Norway's third largest lake.

His occupation at the time of his death was "Maskinist", so most probably he worked in a ship's engine. The fact that the coastal steam ship line "Hurtigruten" called at the port of Stokmarknes, and also that he died in Stokmarknes even if his permanent address was in Trondheim, could indicate that he worked onboard one of the vessels in the Hurtigruten fleet.

Thank you Tore.  Are we sure this is the Anton Rikard Hoff married to Severine Petrine Pettersen ?

His address at the time of death  - Østersunds gate 4 - corresponds with his address in the 1910 census for Trondheim, so it seems quite clear that this Anton is "your" Anton
