Can somebody please help me understand why there are possibly two kirkebøker for the Strømm præstegjeld in the period 1878-1899 when there was only one church in the sogn?

I have been informed that there was only one church in Strømm clerical district (præstegjeld) in this period. The church was Svelvik church which was rebuilt in 1856 and still stands today.

But when I look at kirkebøker for 1878-1899 for Strømm, I find 2 sogn for that period.

I find:
Looking at the baptisms they are very different, that is, the dates and children baptised in one are very different to the other.
This would suggest to me that these are 2 different churches, and that Svelvik was not the only church in Strømm parish.

Can somebody please help me know if there were 2 churches in Strømm (Strømm & Svelvik), and if so, where was this Strømm church located?

Thank you.
Chris.

I am not the Archive ..., nevetheless:

The district pertaining to a church is a "sokn".

One or more "sokn" comprise(s) a "prestegjeld" (literary:"districts that pays a 'prest' (clergy)"

The distinction is tricky to translate into English (both are "parish"), but "parish" and "subparish"

are used; or as here: "parish" and "local parish".

If you look at the title pages

https://goto.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060530090329  "for Strømmens Sogn i Strømmens Præstegjeld"

and

https://goto.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060516090406 "for Svelviks Sogn i Strømmens Præstegjeld"

it becomes obvious that there are two "sokn" (two churches), Strøm(men) and Svelvik.

A separate protocol is made for each "sokn".

Google translate:

The old church had eventually become too small, and it was decided to build a new one; this was completed in 1859. The Strømm congregation had previously been an annex to Hurum, sharing a minister with the congregation there; with the new church came a demand for a dedicated minister and a separation from Hurum. This request was granted, and from 1861, Svelvik and Strømm became a separate parish with its own minister.

The arrangement involving a shared sheriff remained in place until the sheriff's office was closed, while the shared church and minister have continued to the present day.”

Thank you for this information. It is very helpful.

Are you able to explain how this operated on a practical level?

I assume babies were baptised in the local church on a Sunday?

Were there two church services held each Sunday (one for the Strømm sogn & another for the Svelvik sogn), in the same church with the same priest?

Or was there just one church service and all members from both Strømm & Svelvik attended together?

If I look at a random date in both registers, say 6th August 1893, I find a Ragnar Tonsberg baptised in Svelvik and then an Andreas baptised in Strømm.

The handwriting is different in each register.

How did this work on the day?

Were the baptisms for one sogn conducted first, and entered into one register, and then the baptisms for the other sogn conducted after and entered into the other register?

Or was it done some other way?

I hope you are able to clarify this for me.

I would expect it continued as before, except that geography decided which book the entry was made in. The new church had been built for both the new districts. The division was made to follow the new status Svelvik got based on trading rights and loading ships. (“ladested”=city) and fiscal division.

I have not compared the two, and not any former knowledge of this, except I looked at the first page in the Journal a «diary-page» just now. In Strømm you can see it only refers to the entries for Sv(elvik) where the subject for the service/sermon is entered.

Svelvik: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/3542/22338/2

But diary for 1893 in Svelvik is missing.

The Strømm diary reveal 4 bapt. that day. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/3954/20603/25 Adding the two you mention and Marie Elisabeth in Strømm and Hans Kristian in Svelvik , (Hans Kristian baptized at home but confirmation of the bapt. in the church on that date) makes 4, so the Diary seems to have been kept jointly for a few years after 1890.

The text was from Luke 19:41 that day: As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it.

Thank you for the explanation.

I saw the ‘dagregister’ previously but my ability to read Norwegian is limited so I looked at other registers.

I will have to study it a bit more to understand.

In the meantime, here is another example of what I meant.

Same day, but different baptisms in each register.

I thought this meant two separate churches but I have been told it means one church but two sub-parishes.
