Travels of Zakarias Simonsen, Vardø, Finnmark

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to follow the travels of the fisherman and soldier  Zakarias Simonsen of Vardø, Finnmark to various countries such as England and Denmark during the 1800 to 1845  time frame?

I believe it is the third entry, left hand page

From his marriage with Ane in 1817 until 1833, he is recorded as father in the baptisms of 8 children, including the still born in 1829:

Karen Margrethe born February 4, 1818

Hanna born April 20, 1820

Jacobine born February 8, 1823

Brithe Marie born July 25, 1825

Hendricke Kathrine born February 8, 1828

A still born in 1829

Elen born December 27, 1830

Søren born July 7, 1833

All these records show Zacharias in Vardø. What suggests he ever left?

This post from Ellen Charge.

Through MyHeritage, I have determined the existence of ~3 distinct triangulating match clusters, which are outlined in the attached Excel spreadsheet. I have also identified, using the more extensive trees of some matches, two couples that are the shared ancestors of a few of my matches: one from Hedmark (Matthias Halvorsen Vestby [b. 1822, d. 1897 + Marthe Christoffersen b. 1823, d. ?], the other from Finnmark and Troms (Hanne Zakariasdatter Bork/Borch [b. 1820, d. 1869]  + Jens Johan Bork/Borch [b. 1812, d. 1886]).

I was not able to find a link with the family listed as being from Hedmark. I am now trying the family from Finnmark, Since Zakarias the father of Hanne was both a soldier and fisherman, I was hoping to find some connection between he or perhaps one of his siblings and England.

Two of the ancestors of Ellen Charge are likely of uncertain parentage and were born between 1826 to 1836. This fits somewhat with the age range of Zakarias and his male siblings as potential fathers. But they likely need to be found in England during that time.

Three of the sons of Simon Larsen are found in the 1801 Census.  Zachrias, Søren and Berteus.

Where does it say he was a soldier and fisherman? It was not mentioned in the church records I checked.

Here is Hanna’s baptism, no 17 on the left page

Zacharias Simonsen
Position:
Ungk. Fisker

Apparently not a soldier. I misread the marriage record and included the Soldat that belongs to the man directly below Zacharias Simonsen. Johan Jørgen Hansen.

I must have been tired when I composed the comment as the reference is clearly 3rd down left hand page.

This is a record from 1885 regarding Zacharias Simonsen born 1855, not the one born 1791

He might well have been a fisherman like his father Simon Larsen, but I have not seen this explicitly stated anywhere

Digging a little further brings up the Tree on Geni.com

A Google translation from the Bygdebok description of the family

Hanna and her husband Jens Johan are mentioned on page 439 in the book "Gårds- og slektshistorie for Dyrøy, volume III, written by Oddbjørn Knutsen. They lived in Forstrand in Dyrøy before they moved to Vardø. Jens Johan was born here. It says that they had 5 children before they moved, the names are also found here, and match those registered here on geni.com

For the OP. you can go to the Geni.com site for the Father , look up in the right hand corner for Box labelled Action. Click on Descendants and pick how far you want to search and look at the list of descendants and see if any of them are connected to England or the UK in any fashion.

https://www.geni.com/people/Simon-Seljeelv/6000000022451971067?through=6000000000048964824

looked four generations from Simon Larson Seljeelv which seems to cover the time frame when  this line would have linked with your line to lead to DNA showing up.

I saw several descendants who emigrated to America but no connection from this family to any place in the UK.

American example: Descendant of 2. Lars Simonsen, Berg b. June 9, 1787,

4. Gabriel Albrigt Larson b. February 21, 1844, Fagerbukt, Tromsøysund, Tromsø, Troms, Norge (Norway); d. June 23, 1876, Forest City, Iowa, United States

Probably this fellow, birth date and year is a little off but not terrible.
