Hello,

I am conducting extensive historical research regarding Generalkonsul Jens Martin Bolstad, who served as the Consul-General for Norway and Sweden in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He died in Curitiba, Brazil, on December 25, 1905.

According to British probate records from London (dated May 1906), his estate included effects worth £3222, and the administration was granted to his brother, the parish priest (sogneprest Johan Norberg Bolstad), who was stationed in Stryn around 1906/1907.

The Brazilian archival records from Curitiba deal almost exclusively with his local burial expenses and the arrangements made by Vice-Consul Johan Frulund. However, they lack the specific inventory of personal items that were sent back to Norway.

I am trying to locate the official post-mortem estate, consular settlement, or probate records (dødsbo / skifterett / konsulatoppgjör) handled by the Norwegian authorities or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when his wealth and remaining effects were transferred to his brother, Pastor Johan Norberg Bolstad, between 1906 and 1907.

Specifically, I am looking for any detailed inventory list to confirm if his official consular gala uniform, dress sword, or signet ring were returned to Norway or if they were buried with him in Brazil, as no such items ever appeared in public auctions or family collections.

Could anyone please assist me in locating the specific archive fund, shelf mark, or ledger from the Regional State Archives (Statsarkivet) or Riksarkivet that covers the private estate and official consular accounts for Jens Martin Bolstad or his brother Johan Norberg Bolstad during 1906–1907?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Hi,

Searches in the archival catalogues of Utenriksdepartementet (UD) have not revealed any folders dealing explicitly with Jens Martin Bolstad's estate or probate records. There are many boxes that deal with the abandoned belongings /estates of norwegians abroad. These files seemingly belong to "ordinary" Norwegians and not people working at the consulates. UD's archive follows an archival key and such matters have the code K-12.

As this is a forum for archival guidance, rather than actual searches in the archives, I recommend that you submit a formal inquiry concerning Jens Martin Bolstad. Use the form "Generelle henvendelser / general inquiries" on this website: https://www.nasjonalarkivet.no/samleside-for-skjema/

Best regards,
