Jarlsberg Vaerk

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am having difficulty tracking down where the records for Jarlsberg Vaerk might be kept. From my (limited) research, it appears it could be located in either Skoger or Konnerud, maybe even Drammen, it just depends on the time frame.

The reason for my question - my 5th great-grandmother, Anne Nilsdatter, was born in Jarlsberg Vaerk in about 1796, per her 1865 Census in Eiker (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038091011792). It appears Jarlsberg Vaerk was a mining operation - is that correct?

I have Anne marrying Torger Pedersen in 1816 in Eiker (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/327/pv00000000936259), but her life before this has been difficult to track down. Per Anne and Torger's children's baptism records in Eiker, there are 3 other Nilsdatters who show up (in my Norwegian research, it is 90% of the time family that is listed for a child's baptism, would that be accurate to say?). Lisbet Nilsdatter, Cornelia Nilsdatter and Kirstine Nilsdatter. I have found no Cornelia or Kirstine outside of the baptism records, listed as godparents. However, it appears that Lisbet Nielsdatter is more well known - she is listed as marrying Juritz Antonisen in 1810 in Eiker (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/327/pv00000001147472). Both Juritz and Elisbet appear as baptismal witnesses/godparents for Ingeborg Maria, daughter of Anne & Torger (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000001805077). If Elisbet is a sister to Anne, others have Elisbet as being born in Vang, Hedmark on 20 December 1784 (although I am having difficulty finding the actual birth record here).

Does anyone have any ideas on 1) Jarlsberg Vaerk and where to look and 2) if Lisbet and Anne could be sisters?

Much thanks for any new ideas or directions to look.

Heather

Konnerud mines, known as Konnerud gruver as well as Konnerud verk, Jarlsberg verk and Det jarlsbergske bergverk, was situated at Konnerud in Skoger. Skoger merged with Drammen in 1964.

There are some separate church books for Det jarlsbergske bergverk

Heather, unfortunately the Lisbet(h) or Elisabet(h) Nilsdatter, married to Juritz With Antonisson Røgeberg (1790-1857), you have as a baptism witness for Anne and Torger's daughter Ingeborg Maria in 1818 was NOT Anne's sister. Her origin has been discussed and documented here (in Norwegian):

http://www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/viewtopic.php?t=121783

http://www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/viewtopic.php?t=121825

The conclusion was that this Lisbeth or Elisabeth Nilsdatter Skråstad (1784-1876) was born at Skråstadeiet, Vang, Hedmark in Desember 1784, even though the exact date doesn't occur in the records. The reason why Anne and Torger used them as witnesses was probably either that they were neighbors or that Juritz was Torger's superior at Hasselverket.

Nils was - and still is - a very common name in Norway. So, in the same way, neither Cornelia and Kirstine necessarily have to have been Anne's sisters. The one transcribing these records was unable to figure out which surname or address Kirstine Nilsdatter used in 1818. However, for this period there are double sets of church records as a backup if the original ministerial record should be lost. When I look at this backup, the sexton's record, I find that she use the surname Hougfos (modern spelling Haugfoss), which is at Modum, just to the north of Eiker.

There was in those days a strong tradition that children had to be named after their grandparents first, and then their great-grandparents. Thus, a common method in Norwegian genealogy is to look at the names a couple gave to their children in order to see if those names might give some clues to who their parents were. As far as I'm able to find out Torger and Anne hadde these children baptized in Eiker:

Peder 1816: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000001800679

Ingeborg Maria 1818: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000001805077

Maren Andrine 1821: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000001809200

Aase Hansine 1824: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051109020560

Berthe Syrine 1826: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000001821864

Nicoline 1832: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000003092361

And probably this one in Modum too:

Nils 1829: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051109020975

If she and Torger followed the tradision, one of their daughters - most likely the second one - was named after Anne's mother. If you know the names of Torger's mother and grandmothers, they may prove useful to eliminate which names are from Anne's family.

When I look at Konnerud and the surroundings in the National Census of 1801 I find a few of possible candidates for Anne:

https://digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058285002056

https://digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058285002026

https://digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058285000688

It's my experience that people living at the Jarlsberg or Konnerud Verk might be found in a number of different church records; those of Konnerud, Skoger, Strømsø and Tangen.

I have found Anne Maria baptized 25 okt 1795 at Vestfold fylke, Skoger, Det Jarlsbergske bergverk i Skoger, Ministerialbok nr. I 1 (1746-1814), Fødte og døpte 1796, Side 97 https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070402610097 . Parents are Niels Larssen  and Kari Mathisdatter. may be she is the rignt person?

Thank you all for the responses!

Jan, I found Anna Maria in Skoger but unfortunately she died in 1796 (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/267/pg00000001570589). Otherwise I was thinking it might have been her!

A cousin and I have found a couple of additional Anne's that may be a hit, based upon the hint to look at the names of the parents based on their kids:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058275001168

and

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058275001242

The first one would follow the tradition stated by Dag above. The second one is an option as Anne and Torger's third daughter is named Aase.

If the first entry is correct, she was born in 1794 in Eiker to Niels Stephensen and Mari Gulbrandsdatter but there is no farm name listed next to her father's name? https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8488/68?indexing=

It looks like this Anne is living in 1801 in Hasselvaerket, but I can't seem to find that on a map? Is that anywhere close to Jarlsberg? My thinking is there might be reason that Anne may not have also put the correct place of birth, but just a place near it?

As for the second option, where would Lie be as well? Anywhere near Jarlsberg/Konnerud?

A good try. I agree with you.

I have looked mor into Anne, daughter of  Niels Stephensen and Mari Gulbrandsdatter.

Anne Nilsdatter and Torger Pedersen married in Haug church, Eiker 4th april 1816 https://digitalarkivet.no/view/327/pv00000000936260

At that time she lived at Dahlereie

Their son Peder is babtised 8th sept. 1816 https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000001800679

The parents lived at Dahler:Eie i Bingen.  Bingen is not too far from Hassel and Skotselv where Hassel jernverk was located.

Annes was baptized  26th oct 1894 https://digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000003926909

Her confirmation was https://digitalarkivet.no/view/279/pk00000000210813

The question then could be is why Anne  is mentioned as place of born at Jarlsbergs Værk in 1865.

Heather, I'm thinking of an alternative approach to solving this problem. Anne Nilsdatter was still alive in 1865. Do you know when and where she died?

Unfortunately, I do not know when or where she died. The last I found her was in the 1865 Census. Her husband passed away in Eiker in 1857.

2 of her daughters immigrated to North America (Maren and Nikoline). Beyond this, I have not been able to find a death record.

I looked for the death for TorgerPedersen in the churchbook, but I was not able to find the husband og Anne Nilsen.

What I found Wes the death of Torger Petersen 68 years old ( born 1789?) https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051118030367

I looked into Buskerud fylke, Dødsfallsprotokoll nr. 1 (1844-1862), Dødsfallsprotokollside,  https://media.digitalarkivet.no/sk10081211091136

The same Torger Petersen is here mentioned with wife Anne Margrethe Hansen. The it is clear that I have found wrong Torger Pedersen.

Do you have another link with documentation of your Torges Pedersens death?

That was the same Torger I had found. But it clearly isn’t the correct individual - thank you for doing the extra researching to determine his wife.

Now, maybe I have the wrong Anne for the 1865 census as well? Or maybe it is correct. This Anne on the 1865 census is a widower. If it’s the correct Anne, then Torger (the correct Torger) should be listed in deaths and burials somewhere.

I started to map where the family had lived in the different phases of their lives, and found out that they lived at Sønju-eiet, Bingen, Bakke Parish, Øvre Eiker at least from the 1830s. This piece of information led me to Anne Nilsdatter's death and burial records! The address Sønju-eiet means that they lived at a croft on the land of the Sønju Farm.

She died at Sønju-eiet on December 13th 1858, was buried at Bakke Cemetery on December 28th and had her burial ceremony on January 1st 1859. Her age was stated to have been 66 years old, which means that the most likely years of her birth is 1792 or 1793.

The sheriff's death register shows that she was survived by her husband and the following children:

Peder, 44 years old

Ingeborg, married, in America

Berte, married to Ole Pedersen, at Vestby-eiet

Nikoline, married to a beam chopper named Ole

Anne, 28, unmarried

Aase, 26, unmarried

She and Torger owned their own house and a number of unspecified movables.

I guess it is!

Torger died as a pauper at Sønju-eiet on October 28th 1867 and was buried at Bakke Cemetery on November 10th, age 78 years old:

The Sheriff's death record states that he owned nothing when he died, and that he was survived by the following children:

Peder, living at Modum

Maren Andrine, married, living in America

Aase Karine, married, living in Skoger, Vestfold

Berte Sørine, married to Ole Pedersen, at Westbyeiet

Ingeborg Maria, married to Olaus Holtan, living in Lier, Buskerud

This is fantastic - thank you Dag and Jan for all the help! I also didn't know about the lensmannskontor either - this is a wonderful other tool/source to use!

One outstanding question - was it common for Torger and Anne's death record to list incorrect ages / years of birth? It seems to me from the above, that Anne is most likely born in 1794 to Niels Stephensen and Mari Gulbrandsdatter. The only other Anne born in Eiker in this timeframe would be in 1796 to Nils Pedersen and Mari Larsdatter. The same goes for Torger - my Torger (or what I had found in my research) is he was born on 22 Jan 1791 in Eiker to Peder Povelsen and Ingeborg Torgersdatter. However, there is another Torger born on 22 Sep 1795 in Eiker to Peder Andersen and Ingeborg Torgersdatter. However, when looking at their marriage record in 1816 (see link above in former post), it shows their ages as 25 and 21. I would guess these would be a more accurate representation of their actual date of births as they are much closer to when it actually happened than the death record? Would that be a correct statement?

Listed age in 19th Century - or older - sources is often notorious in its inaccuracy. Thus, you have to take into account a "wiggle room" of some years in both directions. On the other hand listings from early years are often more accurate than those for middle aged or elderly persons. However, listed age in death registers and burial records is always second hand information, given by someone else than the recorded person. It wasn't unusual that neither the persons themselves nor their closest family members knew exactly their age.

This is your Torger in 1801: https://digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058275002711

As you see, his listed age is already one year too high. What makes me sure that this is him, is that his daughter Nikoline was born at the Kolbjørnsrud Farm in 1832. In addition his brother Paul was a baptism witness for at least two of his children.

When it comes to Anne, you have to take into account that Skotselv is very close to the border between the municipalities of Eiker and Modum and that Hasselverket had its activities on both sides of that border. Thus, both sides of the border line has to be regardes as a single "marriage marked". When I look at the Census of 1801 I find at least 9 possible Annes in those two communities:

1. https://di gitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058274001072

2. https://digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058274002012

3. https://digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058275000659

9. https://digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058275006631

The two first are from Modum, the rest of them from Eiker. I've been unable to figure out what happened to the two from Modum. This is what I've found out about the Eiker candidates:

No 3 died in 1806.

No 4 is less likely. She belonged to a farming family, and wouldn't have been mentioned as your Anne was when she wedded Torger.

No 5 I find to be the most like candidate, se below.

No 6 married Torger Jacobsen Leversby in 1819.

No 7 is less likely. The reason is the same as for no 4.

No 8 married Ole Olsen Haugsund in 1822.

No 9 married Christopher Engebretsen Skotselven in 1824.

Your Anne was stated to be from Dalereiet when she and Torger married. I see that Nils Stephensen, the father of no 5, was stated to have lived at Dalereiet when he died in 1832: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/267/pg00000000186619

His wife Mari Gulbrandsdatter died in 1813: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/267/pg00000001146883

The Hasselverket was located at the Daler Farm. Here are two paintings of it:

http://www.eiker.org/Arkiv-OE/Bilder/Industri/SKO-02-Hassel.htm

http://www.eiker.org/Arkiv-OE/Bilder/Industri/SKO-03-Hassel.htm

So my conclusion is that if Anne Nilsdatter was from Eiker, they were her most likely parents.

I agree to Dags conclution and as Jan Sigbjørn I am impressed of the work.

It might be seen as a funfact, but it seems to me that Nils Stephansen married Torger Pedersens mother in 1822.

Nils Stephansens first wife was Anne Johannesdatter. She died at Hassel in 1791 and was buried 9. jan.1791.

Nils married Mari Gulbrandsdatter 26 des. 1792 and she was buried 7 mar 1813.

And I have that Nils Stephansen married widower Ingeborg Torgersdatter 27 jun. 1822.

Ingeborg died at Hasselverket 23 may 1837

Well, hello cousin (or cousin-in-law)! I am descended from Anne through her daughter, Maren, who immigrated to Minnesota with her husband Halvor Sigurdsen. Their daughter, Anna Sophia, is my 3rd great-grandmother. She married Anders Andersen Egge (Andrew Egge) in Freeborn County, Minnesota in 1867.

Thank you again everyone for all the help and excellent job on the research - this is just wonderful! I'm so happy to have broken through this brick wall in my family - this family line had been stumping me for a while!

Cheers,
