Etter en gjennomgang av kirkebøker for Fjelberg, Hordaland 1855-1858 (se også bygdebok Kninnherad 5), ser jeg at veldig mange reiste fra Fjelberg til USA.

 

Mitt spørsmål handler om Hans Sørensen Sætre (født 1795). Innført i kirkebok for Fjelberg 16. mars 1857 under utflyttet til USA. han reiser med kone og 2 barn. (nederst s. 351)

Sammen med de reiser sønnen Søren Hansen Sætre (født 12.8. 1826) med sin familie.

From Ancestry.com: From the very beginning John participated actively in his community. In the spring and summer of 1860 he served as the first Sunday School teacher for Little Cedar Lutheran Church near Adams. During the winter of 1860 and 1861 the first public school was held in the Sjo farmhouse. A teacher from Austin conducted classes in the English language for the children of the early pioneers.

John, like his father, had been a cabinet maker in Norway. His handiwork included the steamer trunk used for his family's belongings on the ocean voyage from their native land to America.

John Johnson was the first member of the family to come to America, arriving in 1857 with his wife and children. After spending some months in northeast Iowa at Ossian, John Johnson Sjo moved his family to Adams in southern Minnesota. Three years later on June 25, 1861 he filed claim on 160 acres of a military land grant belonging to Zacharia Long. After completing the terms of the agreement, on May 9, 1864 John obtained title to the farm in Section 8 of Adams Township in Mower County.
