Murray Rystead
Good morning, I've done a bunch of research for this particular topic and have almost next to no success getting a satisfactory answer. I even asked Chat GPT and i feel the information given needs to be taken with a grain of salt, hence why i'm coming on here to ask. Would soldiers that served in the Norwegian Army between 1899-1905 be given any awards, medals, honors for their service? As many already know I've asked alot about my great grandpa Olav Knutsson Rysstad (1877-1924) I was kindly given one of his service records by archives i believe. It mentioned his service # and recorded the time he served and where he was from. We know her was part of the Kristiansandske Infantry Brigade and also that he was a Private. Did soldiers at this time in Norway's history get awarded for serving? I have also read some soldiers got recognition for certain skills as well like marksmanship, etc. If this was in fact a thing, where can this information be found? However, if nothing like a service badge or medals were awarded in this era, then that closes that door. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time! Odd E.Tømmerås
Norway declared independence from Sweden in 1905 and sent troops to the border in case of war maybe that is what you are looking for , or I could be dead wrong about the years Murray Rystead 1 Link to comment https://forum.nasjonalarkivet.no/topic/331488-military-awards-honors/#findComment-2579853 Share on other sites

Murray Rystead
There is a chance my grandpa probably was done his term around 1905. I think he shifted over to politics in the small village of Rysstad. That's very interesting about the independence from Sweden. I think i was thinking more prior to that since my great grandpa was serving at that time. Great feedback! I will look into the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum.
